A new nationwide survey carried out by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) revealed that smokers are at lesser risk of contracting coronavirus due to low seropositivity, as per media reports.
Some studies say smokers are 23% less likely to be diagnosed with Wuhan virus.

In April 2020 Daily Mail reported that 28 studies shows the number of smokers among hospitalized patients is “lower than expected”.

After this study at least we can ask our parents “I am sure you won’t mind if I smoke”

But wait a sec, as the famous Bollywood dialogue goes “Picture abhi baki hai mere dost!!!

It has been proven that smokers are 5 times as likely to develop influenza and twice as likely to have pneumonia.
Tobacco companies sponsor studies. Even WHO has issued a clear warning “do not fall for such studies”.
It is very important to know that one should not trust studies blindly. Because studies are biased towards their sponsors. Any research required time, money and energy.

But sponsoring studies is not always philanthropy. Number of time sponsors do it for profit by pushing narratives that favors them.
As mention above about article in Daily Mail. In those 28 studies 22 of them conducted in China.

China is world’s largest tobacco producer as well as consumer. 1 in every 3 cigarettes is smoked in the world is smoked in China.

Sponsored studies are not limited to smoking.

  1. In the past COCA-COLA has funded research the said physical activity is more effective for weight loss than cutting down soft drinks or beverages. Which means if you want to loss weight workout, cutting down soft drinks will not work.
  2. The alcohol industry funded studies that said red wine is good for heart or studies which says moderate drinking gives longer life

3. Oil industries tried to downplay climate change citing research

This is called funded privileges, that’s why one should not believe on studies blindly.

Problems with research

  1. Most studies has small and biased samples. Researchers much include samples from every gender, age, nationality, race and socio-economic levels.
  2. Research muddled the truth with complicated words which is also called obfuscation

So what’s the conclusion, be at the study on smoking, cooking oil, wine take everything that comes is your way as a pinch of salt.
